GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) and its US collaborator Vir Biotechnology (Nasdaq: VIR) disclosed on Tuesday that its COVID-19 antibiotic is effective against all variations of the Omicron strain, pointing to the latest data from early-stage research. Following the news announcement, Vir Bio shares gained 11.96% or $4.59 to close at $42.98. Likewise, GlaxoSmithKline’s shares inched 1.48% or $0..62 higher to end Tuesday’s trading session at $42.38.

GSK and Vir have produced what is referred to as pseudoviruses that include significant coronavirus alterations common to all suspect strains that have appeared thus far, and also have conducted lab experiments to determine their susceptibility to sotrovimab therapy.

Specifically, the duo stated that their COVID medication, dubbed ‘sotrovimab’, which received authorization for administration in the United Kingdom at the beginning of this month, was proven to be effective against 37 distinct alterations in the spike glycoprotein (S-protein) of the Omicron variant in the report released from a trial concluded recently. The data remains to be published in a peer-reviewed journal for medicine.

GlaxoSmithKline and Vir Bio also highlighted that sotrovimab preserved its ‘in vitro efficacy’ against critical distinct Omicron strains, predicated on what they described as a preliminary preclinical result obtained via “pseudo-virus testing.”

The CEO of Vir Biotechnology, George Scangos, claimed that Sotrovimab is the foremost monoclonal antibody to demonstrate preclinical action against every SARS-CoV-2 strain studied so far, including Omicron, and also the still widespread and highly infectious Delta variant.

Scangos further said, “Considering the less than threefold neutralization change seen in the preliminary pseudo-virus experiment, we are optimistic that sotrovimab will consistently deliver considerable benefit for individuals seeking early therapy to prevent the most serious COVID-19 complications.”

“These preliminary findings suggest that our monoclonal antibody has the ability to be powerful against the newest variation, Omicron, as well as all other mutations of major worry described by the WHO so far,” GSK Chief Scientific Officer Hal Barron stated.

Another preliminary study published last week indicated that the medication was effective against major variants of the Omicron strain. Sotrovimab has been engineered to bind to the spike protein, which is present on the external coat of the coronavirus. However, Omicron showcases an abnormally large number of alterations in that protein.

The World Health Organization announced yesterday that it has documented 432 occurrences of the Omicron variation among its 21 member nations as of December 6th, but that there is insufficient evidence to precisely state the level of infectiousness of the strain, compared with previous variants.

The positive news regarding sotrovimab therapy for COVID-19 infections is expected to keep the stock of GlaxoSmithKline range-bound with a slight bullish bias in the short term.

The historical price chart indicates that the stock is rising after testing the support at 38. Additionally, the stock is trading above its 50-day moving average, while the Chaikin money flow indicator has a positive reading. Therefore, we are anticipating the stock to remain in an uptrend in the short term.
