The shares of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) gained ground yesterday after Dan Ives, an equities analyst at Wedbush, upwardly revised the price target for the iPhone manufacturer. Notably, the Wedbush analyst has an outperform rating for the stock of Apple, which appreciated by over 10% last month following the release of better-than-anticipated second-quarter results and the announcement of a gargantuan $110 billion share repurchase program. The stock of Apple ended Tuesday’s trading session at $189.99, up $0.01, or 0.01%, from the prior close.

In response to increasing competition in China’s mobile phone market, Apple has strategically implemented price cuts to maintain its market penetration, a tactic that seems to be effective, according to Dan Ives. Recent distribution chain assessments give hints of consolidation for the iPhone, a critical development as Apple prepares to roll out its latest model, likely to be christened the iPhone 16, in September.

Dan Ives noted that recent checks by the Wedbush Tech Team in Taiwan revealed that April data for Apple’s logistics chain stood 2% higher than historical trends, despite consensus expectations remaining unaltered. Ives attributed this outperformance in part to inventory buildup just before China’s May and June holidays.

Additionally, there has been a modest increase in Chinese mobile phone production forecasts for 2Q 2024 (June quarter), with robust anticipations for Q3 builds. This data reinforces the expectation that iPhone production will increase in anticipation of the iPhone 16’s release in September.

Investor perception has become increasingly positive, particularly with the upcoming developer conclave, where Apple is expected to make significant announcements related to generative AI (artificial intelligence) and its integration into the Apple environment.

Ives emphasized the importance of the forthcoming developer conclave, describing it as Apple’s most significant happening in a decade. The analyst anticipates the disclosure of a path-breaking partnership with OpenAI, which will likely feature an OpenAI Chatbot with unique capabilities built upon Apple’s on-device and cloud-powered large language models, as well as AI enhancements powered by Apple’s premium chips. Furthermore, Apple may introduce the concept of an AI-centered App Store, encouraging developers to create consumer applications utilizing AI technology-powered tools.

With the imminent release of the iPhone 16, the Wedbush analyst predicts a significant smartphone refurbishment cycle driven by the integration of various AI aspects. He estimates that up to 270 million iPhones could be upgraded following the launch of the new model. This anticipated supercycle, coupled with the strategic price cuts and enhanced AI capabilities, positions Apple for continued success in the competitive smartphone market.

Based on the aforesaid facts, while reaffirming the outperform rating, Ives upwardly revised the price target of Apple to $275 from the prior level of $250.

The upward revision of the price target is expected to keep Apple’s stock slightly bullish in the near term.

The historical price chart indicates that the stock of Apple is rising after consolidating at $180 levels. The next resistance is anticipated to be only near $196. Additionally, the stock is trading above its 50-day moving average, while the MACD indicator is showing a positive reading. Therefore, we anticipate Apple’s stock to remain in an uptrend for the next few trading sessions.
