Salesforce Inc (NYSE: CRM) reported better-than-anticipated fiscal 2023 second quarter revenues and earnings. However, the customer relationship management provider slashed its FY 2023 outlook, citing an uncertain economic scenario. Following the release of quarterly results, the stock of Salesforce fell by 3.39%, or $6.10, to close Thursday’s trading session at $173.91.

The San Francisco, California-based Salesforce reported second-quarter revenues of $7.72 billion, an increase of 21.80% from $6.34 billion in the similar quarter last year.

For the second quarter, which ended July 31, 2022, the company posted earnings of $68 million, or $0.07 per share, compared with $535 million, or $0.56 a share, in the quarter that ended July 31, 2021.

Excluding amortization of purchased intangibles, stock-based compensation expense, and income tax effects and adjustments, among others, the company reported Q2 2023 adjusted earnings of $1.19 billion, or $1.19 per share, a decline from $1.402 billion, or $1.48 a share, in Q2 2022.

Analysts surveyed by Refinitiv had anticipated the company would record adjusted earnings of $1.02 per share on revenues of $7.69 billion.

Commenting on the results, Bret Taylor, Co-CEO of Salesforce, said, “Our results demonstrate the strength and diversity of our product portfolio across regions, industries, and segments.”

Segment wise,

  • Subscription and support revenues surged 20.80% y-o-y to $7.143 billion.

Specifically, the sales division, which includes Cloud software for administering business opportunities, recorded a nearly 15% rise in revenues to $1.70 billion.

Service revenues rose by 14% y-o-y to $1.83 billion.

Platform and other divisions (including Slack) posted revenues of $1.48 billion, up 53% on a y-o-y basis.

  • Professional services and other revenues were $577 million, an increase of 35.3% from last year.

Looking ahead, Salesforce expects 3Q 2023 revenues in the range of $7.82 billion to $7.83 billion. Adjusted earnings are anticipated to be between $1.20 and $1.21 per share. Analysts surveyed by Refinitiv are forecasting the company to post adjusted earnings of $1.29 per share on revenues of $8.07 billion. The company also pointed out that its revenue outlook includes a $250 million negative impact in the form of currency conversion rates.

For FY 2023, the company now forecasts revenues of between $30.90 billion and $31 billion, a downward revision from the $31.70 billion to $31.80 billion anticipated earlier. Salesforce also projects FY 2023 earnings of between $4.71 and $4.73 per share. This compares with earlier guidance for earnings of $4.74 to $4.76 per share. Analysts polled by Refinitiv are forecasting earnings of $4.75 per share on revenues of $31.73 billion.

The quarterly earnings beat and downward revision of FY 2023 guidance are expected to keep the stock of Salesforce range bound with a slight bearish bias in the days ahead.

The historical price chart indicates that the stock of Salesforce is declining after facing resistance at 173.90. The next support is anticipated at or near 160. Additionally, the stock is trading below its 50-day moving average while the stochastics indicator is moving towards the bearish zone. Therefore, we anticipate the stock to remain in a downtrend in the near term.
