In a noteworthy move to propel its position in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) market, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMD) has revealed its intention to take over ZT Systems, a prominent cloud computing server solutions provider, for $4.9 billion.

The buyout, which is expected to conclude in the first half of 2025, marks a strategic leap for AMD as it intensifies its competition against industry behemoths like Nvidia in the AI chip sector. The stock of AMD ended Tuesday’s trading session at $156.40, up $1.12, or 0.72%, from the prior close.

The Santa Clara, California-based AMD has been aggressively expanding its AI ecosystem over the past year, investing more than $1 billion to enhance its AI software capabilities and supporting ongoing research and development. The acquisition of ZT Systems aligns with AMD’s broader strategy to expedite the setting up of AI frameworks on a large scale, particularly for cloud and enterprise customers.

AMD’s CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, has stressed that the acquisition is a critical aspect of the company’s long-term AI strategy. She highlighted that integrating ZT Systems’ expertise in AI infrastructure will enable AMD to offer more comprehensive and scalable AI solutions, strengthening its competitive edge in the market.

Secaucus, New Jersey-based ZT Systems has established itself as a top-notch provider of AI infrastructure for hyper-scale computations, servicing major global cloud companies. With over 15 years of experience in the tech sector, ZT Systems specializes in administering AI infrastructure that supports large-scale data centers, making it a valuable asset for AMD as it seeks to churn out high-performance AI chips in large quantities.

The buyout is also anticipated to have a significant effect on AMD’s operational abilities. After the conclusion of the deal, Frank Zhang, CEO of ZT Systems, will become a part of AMD and head of the manufacturing division. Also, Doug Huang, President of ZT Systems, will oversee the chip design and customer assistance squads. These leadership roles will be integrated into AMD’s Data Center Solutions Business Group, ensuring a seamless transition and continuity in operations.

Both AMD and Nvidia depend greatly on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for the production of advanced chips, with TSMC being responsible for approximately 90% of the world’s supply of cutting-edge semiconductors. By acquiring ZT Systems, AMD aims to enhance its AI infrastructure offerings, thereby positioning itself to capture a larger share of the market currently led by Nvidia.

As AMD continues to focus on scaling its AI systems, the integration of ZT Systems is anticipated to generate profits by the end of 2025, following the anticipated closing of the acquisition in 1H 2025. The deal, however, remains subject to regulatory clearance.

As the demand for AI infrastructure continues to grow, AMD’s strategic acquisition of ZT Systems could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of computing.

The news of the acquisition is expected to keep the stock of AMD slightly bullish in the short term.

The historical price chart indicates that the stock of AMD is rising after bouncing off the support at $150. The next major resistance is anticipated to be only near $190. Additionally, the stock is trading above its 50-day moving average, while the ultimate oscillator is rising toward the bullish zone. Therefore, we anticipate AMD’s stock to remain in an uptrend for the next few trading sessions.
