Hong Kong Regulators Approve Launch of Bitcoin and Ether Spot ETFs
Regulators in Hong Kong have given the green light for the launch of spot bitcoin and ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This decision mirrors recent actions in the United States aimed at bringing such products to market.
Specifically, the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong has granted approval to three ETF providers. ChinaAMC has confirmed regulatory clearance for offering “virtual asset management services” and is actively allocating resources towards developing spot bitcoin and ether ETFs. OSL Digital Securities is slated to serve as the custodian for ChinaAMC.
Harvest Global and Bosera International have also obtained SFC approval for their respective bitcoin and ether ETFs. Notably, cryptocurrency trading faces restrictions in mainland China following a significant crackdown in 2021. The eligibility of mainland Chinese investors to participate in cryptocurrency investment via ETFs remains uncertain.
ECB Develops Offline Digital Euro with Focus on Privacy
Last week, the European Central Bank (ECB) issued an update regarding the development of an offline digital euro. The proposed legislation for the central bank digital currency (CBDC) stipulates that the offline variant must give importance to user privacy.
The report outlines specifications for the gadgets to be utilized and highlights several associated challenges. In contrast to the online wallet, a single technology provider will be responsible for the offline solution, necessitating seamless integration with apps that are rolled out by payment service providers.
Designed to emulate cash-based dealings, the digital euro’s offline functionality eliminates the need for third parties, thus circumventing anti-money laundering (AML) measures during transactions. Nevertheless, AML compliance is a must during the wallet’s funding and defunding processes.
Multiple methods are available for topping up the offline digital euro balance, including ATM transactions, visits to bank branches, or retail outlets. Additionally, users can transfer a portion of their online digital euro holdings to the offline balance via a mobile phone wallet.
